5 easy, but highly effective, steps to point out your reps that you simply care

Today more than ever, leaders play a critical role in connecting, calming and inspiring their teams. Even if you and your organization are challenged in this time of uncertainty and change, employees have a lot on their minds and often a mixture of emotions about themselves, their families and their work situation. A little empathy and thoughtful communication can help employees know that you care.

Here are some simple, yet powerful, steps you can take to show employees that they are cared for:

  1. Be visible and communicate often: Personal touchpoints are important for showing people that you understand, they need to stay connected and stay informed. Get in touch with each team member at least once a week, be it in a daily crush, a regular team meeting, a one-to-one meeting, or team discussions.
  2. Check out how they are doing personally: Talk to employees about what happens in their daily life outside of work, including personal interests, family news, or how they are dealing with the current circumstances. Especially when working remotely, employees have fewer opportunities to interact casually with one another than they would at work. That way they can feel that personal connection.
  3. Show that listening and empathy are important to you: In times of uncertainty, people need to feel heard and supported. You can help by listening carefully to what employees have to say, imagining how they are feeling, and expressing support. Think back on what you hear and be sensitive to their needs by offering help or guidance where you can.
  4. Talk about what's important to them, including the little things: Regardless of whether employees ask them or not, they always have questions about how they are doing, what is expected of them and what is happening in the organization. If you keep them in mind as you give directions and input on their job, they'll know that you are considering their needs. But it doesn't just have to be about work. Ask about plans or family events they talked about, or a TV show you both like. To show that you care, you need to talk about the fun things too.
  5. Show appreciation for them and what they do: Be sure to say thank you when they responded or are helpful, and provide specific appreciative feedback about their work. Also think about birthdays, work days and other important dates. Consider adding this dates to your calendar as a reminder to your team members that they feel cared for and valued.

When employees are engaged and inspired, they increase productivity, business growth, and the success of your entire company. And you can sleep a little better knowing that you will do whatever you can to help the staff weather the storm.
