What would I alter: Sally Campbell, Somesuch
In the latest series of articles asking creatives what they want to change about their industry, Somesuch's co-founder, Sally Campbell, reflects on how manufacturing companies can create better environments for employees and find new ways to work after the lockout
Sally Campbell's production career began in 1991 when she moved from New Zealand to London to work as a runner. Before she became a producer, she worked in production roles at advertising agencies and in 2010 founded the production company Somesuch together with Tim Nash and director Nick Gordon.
Over the past decade, Somesuch has worked with some of the world's largest brands and musicians, creating ads for Coca-Cola, Apple, and Amazon, and music videos for Coldplay, The Weeknd, and Michael Kiwanuka. The company now has offices in London and Los Angeles (where Campbell is based) and represents over 30 directors in the United Kingdom and the United States.
Since her time in production, Campbell has seen the best and worst aspects of working in the industry. In the past few months, she has spent a lot of time thinking about what needs to change – not just to make films, but also to create safe, supportive, and inclusive environments for employees. Here she talks to CR about navigating barriers, combating racism and inequality, containing excess and forbearance, and finding better ways to work.
