Daniel Benneworth-Grey on the enjoyment of collages

Our design correspondent Daniel Benneworth-Gray has rediscovered his love for the printed page through his own bookshelves and finds himself quickly when cutting and pasting

I've spent an unsavory part of this year avoiding the York bookstores and charity shops. My eyes and fingers were hungry for the vital printed inspiration that feeds my own work. In frustration, I have diverted that attention to my own bookshelves and revisited a personal library that too often is taken for granted. Unfortunately, reading and looking is not enough for all the pent-up, overflowing energy. No, I've made it my business to cut things up.

Feeling anxious to hop on a passing creative train, I've incorporated the recent collage revival into my book design. I've really cut and pasted for a change, and it's incredibly satisfying – if a little destructive.
