Youting Lin makes use of humor to deliver her designs to life
Designer and animator Youting Lin first became interested in the world of design as a teenager through album covers, MTV graphics, movie title sequences and Japanese commercials.
“I was really inspired by these vivid graphics in motion and made me dig deeper,” says Lin. “Two of the most influential magazines in my life have been WAD and IdN (the DVDs that came with IdN magazine are still in my house somewhere). They played a key role when I was only into design. They have been very helpful to me in understanding design. "
Lin just completed an MFA in Computer Art from the New York School of Visual Art and is now a freelancer in the city. "I feel like I'm being influenced by new fads and tendencies that have led me to include too many aggressive things in a single job," she says of her college days. “But I also found her temporarily. Now I think it's more important to have a fresh eye and do things my own real way. "
As a result, Lin has taken a “less is more” approach and her work is a graphic mix of clean lines with enlarged geometric shapes and figures, all in a poppy color palette. Creating memorable images is an essential part of the design practice. She likes to use animation to bring her graphics to life.
“I really enjoy putting silence in motion, sometimes even the unfinished parts can be the most fascinating,” says Lin. "I also love to combine everything (just like I cook!) And do some digital experiments."
Lin's portfolio includes a short intro on the 100th anniversary of the Bauhaus, a self-portrait for a design studio and her biggest project to date, her graduation film. The film, called A Big Crush, is about romance, sex, and desire, all from a woman's perspective.
While only the trailer has been released for now, it shows Lin's skills perfectly with neat but unexpected transitions and amusing harvests. “Before I turn to the practical work, I think about fun ideas from my daily observations,” says Lin of her creative process. "A Big Crush is about emotions and sex, and it was simply inspired by talking to people around me."
Lin's work often revolves around humor, not only because it helps make her work a little bolder, but also because she wants to bring joy to the people who see her work.
"I feel like a playful sense of humor is the main emotion in my work," she says. "I hope people have fun when they see my work."
