magCulture Dwell will probably be digital for 2020

In a difficult year for the magazine industry, print fans can look forward to the news that magCulture's annual conference is not yet over – but this time in virtual form.

In the style of magCulture Live Online, which replaced its New York conference earlier this year and introduced Gail Bichler and Jaap Biemans from Coverjunkie from New York Times Magazine, the event will be postponed online for two days in the eighth London edition of magCulture Live.

The days are divided into themes, the first of which focuses on activism. It will include lectures by critic Steven Heller on the historical power of magazines as platforms for change. Maya Moumne from Beirut's Journal Safar, who will speak about the publishing scene in the Middle East; and London-based art director Sachini Imbuldeniya, who recently founded the diversity-focused illustration and photo agency Studio Pi.

The second day is all about analog and there will be talks by graphic designer and art director Kurt Koerpel about reinventing Interview magazine and how his work on small zines influenced it, and Rose Nordin from OOMK about the Rabbits Road Press project of the publication empowered people outside of the creative industry to have a voice. In the meantime, Real Review's Jack Self will discuss the importance of Nishant Choksi's vivid facial illustrations that appear on the cover of every issue.

The line-up also includes two keynote speakers, on day one with Empire Editor-in-Chief Terri White, who will explain how her magazine has been flying the flag for films despite the crippling effect of the pandemic on the film industry.

On the second day, Atlantic Creative Director Oliver Munday will talk about the process of the magazine's recent redesign and how he helped reinvent one of America's premier news titles in a particularly turbulent year.

MagCulture Live is open from November 18th to 19th. Tickets are £ 60 per day or £ 90 for both days or £ 45 and £ 60 for students and are available here. magculture.com
