In Ricardo Cavolo's wild drawings

As he publishes a new book, the Barcelona-based artist talks to us about his creative process and what it's like to be introduced to the visual arts from the day you are born

To say that Ricardo Cavolo had an early introduction to the arts would be a bit of an understatement. Born in his father's painting studio in Salamanca, it was perhaps inevitable that his life's work would lie in the fine arts.

He admits that his father's work influenced him. “There was always a creative atmosphere at home. In fact, our house was more like a studio [where there was] painting, sculpture, photography, screen printing. Also, I was a lonely kid, so I spent many hours reading books and comics and movies and cartoons and that helped me create something in my head, ”he says.

“Living in this room makes it easy to understand that life as an artist is possible and that creativity is the main tool. It was like discovering very early that there was an alternative life. "

Over the course of his career, Cavolo has built a portfolio that includes strong color palettes and a regular dose of pop culture keywords. Earlier books focused on lists of his favorite musicians and films. In his latest title, Expo Book, he took his obsession with celebrity one step further and created a book where the pages are purposely designed to be ripped out to display on walls.
