Sunday is a new short film that discusses the role of local soccer teams in supporting men's mental health

The film was filmed in various locations in the north west of England and shows the vital role Sunday League football can play in men's lives and how the lack of play during the UK lockdown may have contributed to mental health issues.

The film combines footage of parking spaces and changing rooms that are currently inactive with audio interviews where amateur gamers talk about their love of the game and the effects of the current lockdown.

Sunday was launched in response to research by Mind during the UK's first lockdown last summer, which showed that nearly half (49%) of adults and over half (52%) of young people said they were mental health deteriorated because they were unable to exercise or exercise. What is also clearly expressed in the film is the important social element that the Sunday League offers.

The film is directed by Charlie Watts, who shot it entirely on 16mm film. In addition to being a filmmaker, Watts is also an amateur footballer.

"I wanted to represent the voices of millions of players across the country who, like myself, have desperately missed the sense of community and connectedness that football brings in the Sunday League," he said.

“The forced break helped to crystallize what we really love about the game and what it brings, which we told based on the number of voices heard in the film. I really hope the film helps highlight the importance of an honest mental health discourse where we can all play a role for our team in and out of the locker room. "
