The stress from the pandemic is excessive
On the occasion of the one year anniversary of the declaration of a global pandemic, we are only just beginning to understand the impact of this health crisis on our lives on both a personal and professional level. Although all the consequences are complex and likely different, we anecdotally know that the pandemic, as well as the social justice and political issues that have escalated during this time, have increased the stress in our lives.
The stress level is at an all-time high
Experts in this field have now confirmed our suspicions. For more than a decade, the American Psychological Association (APA), in collaboration with Harris Polls, has conducted a comprehensive survey of the sources and levels of stress people experience. When the 2020 survey was released, the APA stated, "We are facing a national mental health crisis that could have serious health and social consequences in the years to come."
According to the survey:
- Almost 19% of Americans say their mental health is worse than it was last year.
- 60% of respondents say they find the number of problems America is facing right now overwhelming.
- Almost 8 in 10 adults (78%) say the coronavirus pandemic is a significant source of stress in their lives.
- 2 in 3 adults (67%) state that they have experienced increased stress in the course of the pandemic.
- About 77% of adults say the future of our nation is a source of stress, up from 66% in 2019.
Employers can help reduce employee stress
The detailed results of the APA are broadly based and document information from many populations, including Gen Z, younger students, and low-income people. In addition to the data, the report offers important recommendations.
Of particular interest to employers are the APA's proposals, including: “Providing clear communication to employees and supervisors about expectations, support resources and new policies that respond directly to the impact of the pandemic. This reduces job insecurity, which is a major contributor to employee stress. "
