Acknowledge and encourage your staff for his or her work

It's a question I often get from managers: "Do I have to praise someone on my team for just doing their job?" My answer is always "yes".

Not recognizing employees for a job well done is a classic managerial mistake that leads to withdrawal.

Jobs do not inspire and motivate people. Leaders do. And executives can easily fall into a trap where they question the logic of praising someone for doing what is expected of them. However, recognition of good work is a key motive for employees.

The best leaders know that the only way to get things done and move a business forward is through people. This means that leaders need to go beyond raising employees who need additional motivation and recognizing those who show the behavior you want to continue to see. It may seem easy to say thank you for a job well done and reward employees for showing your desired behavior, but it is often overlooked.

Here are some simple but powerful ways to share recognition with your team:

  • Assign the person's reward: Start with individual settings. Reward employees in a way that they really find rewarding.
  • Assign the reward to success: Effective reinforcement should be adjusted to take into account the importance of performance.
  • Be punctual and specific: To be effective, rewards must be given as soon as possible after the desired behavior or performance. If you know exactly what you value, you can create a culture of appreciation and encourage others to adopt similar behaviors.
