Django Django's Spirals video is a implausible journey
Maxim Kelly directs the music video, which consists of an endless series of hypnotically spinning mandalas
The director reverted to an animation technique well over a hundred years old to create the video using Fantascopes – discs that spin on a turntable to create gypsy moving images.
The video shows six of these fantascopes, all made by hand but combined with digital techniques. According to Kelly, the images are an attempt to "translate the psychedelic journey".
"The visual illusion created by spinning the hard drives at the right speed in conjunction with the shutter on a camera is both confusing and hypnotic," he explains.
“I was drawn to the way the animations go in and out, drive the mind and deceive and then back again. That felt a lot like a psychedelic experience to me. The challenge was to combine the old with the modern. The analog and the digital. "
