Easy methods to Create Excessive High quality Scalable Backlinks

Linking used to be easy: you wrote a bunch of articles, sent them to an article submission website, and got an external link back to your website.

That doesn't work in the post-penguin era. While the right backlinks can increase your Google ranking, sales, and branding, the wrong ones can penalize your website. You need to learn how to properly build a high quality backlink portfolio if you are to see success.

In this in-depth post, I'll show you a strategic link building technique that works. It is scalable and if you apply it to your website your rankings should improve. You can even improve your conversion rate by serving as a high authority on search engines in this field.

In this post, I'll cover:

  1. Understand what Google wants
  2. How to scale your link building efforts
  3. Keyword research and targeting
  4. This is how you earn editorial links

Why is an effective backlink portfolio important?

Backlinks remain an important Google ranking factor. Today, an effective link building strategy is all about trust and popularity.

According to Quick Sprout, domain trust / authority makes up 30% of the Google ranking algorithm.

Backlinks make up 30% of Google's ranking factors

About half of all SEOs spend $ 10,000 or more per month getting backlinks.

When making this type of investment, you need accurate information on how to create links that Google will trust.

Step 1: Once you understand what Google wants, you will get backlinks

When it comes to search engine optimization (SEO) and marketing, Google determines what works. If you create content that aligns with Google's mission, you are more likely to rank higher in the SERPs.

Understand what Google backlinks are trying to get

Google also believes that there is more and more information out there. As you build external links, organizing information (to help your reader) becomes your mission too. If you pay close attention to what your readers and ideal buyers want, you don't have to use hype to sell your products.

If you want to get backlinks without being penalized, you need to understand and work closely with Google's mission statement. If you don't, the technique won't work.

Before you start creating a website link to your webpage, ask yourself these questions about Google's mission:

  • Is my content well organized?
  • Do I offer useful information about the websites that link to mine?

Let's talk about the first question, because for effective link building, the organization of the website is important.

When people come to your website, what else should they do (especially the first-time visitors)? Make sure your website is easy to navigate. Here is a good example:

Example: Simple site navigation that gives you backlinks

Here is another website with disorganized navigation:

Example of good site navigation to get backlinks

Proper navigation is the first step in organizing your content so people and search engines can find useful and relevant information. The second step is to lay a foundation on which other websites will want to link external to yours.

This is how you develop a strong backlink foundation

Let's say you've written and published a useful post and want to get it on Google. You can assume that the best way to do this is to get lots of backlinks.

This is not correct. Generating links to new content too quickly looks manipulative and this can be a red flag for Google.

Website types that affect backlinks success

The better solution is to help Google find and index your useful content. Once it's indexed, you can get real links that can help you improve your rankings.

How to help Google find and index your content

In order to get backlinks to your site, you need to index your site. There are a few ways to do this.

I've published a data-driven infographic that explains how Google uses social signals to determine rankings. More methods can be found here.

Step 2: scale your backlink efforts

Many people find link building and link acquisition stressful. Part of the reason for this is that they don't produce great content that people love to share.

In Moz's classic book How to Rank, Cyrus Shepard recommends that "90% of your efforts should go into creating great content and 10% into link building." This is the 90/10 rule for link building.

90/10 rule of backlinks

As tough as it sounds, Shepard says, if you're struggling to generate a high quality backlink to your website, chances are you've reversed the rule.

If you want to be successful with scalable link building, you need high quality content that ensures high PR (page rank).

Link building is about positioning your content and getting more people to link to you. In other words, a single post can be used to get many high quality links back to your website.

A high quality external link has two main advantages over traditional links: relevance and trust. Here's the difference:

Let's say you have a dog training website and you receive an inbound link from an article directory. Google does not see this website link as relevant to the topic of your website.

However, if that link acquisition is from a website related to dog training, such as: Not only will you improve your rankings, but your website will be relevant and valuable to those who visit – and that will help you earn more links and get one – at a dog food store or a dog-related discussion forum achieve high PR.

How do you find authority pages to build relationships and get relevant backlinks?

The easiest way to do this is to google keywords that are used to access websites that are relevant to your area of expertise. You can filter out those of your competitors.

Once you've identified a few websites, you need to research them further to see which ones help the most with link building. You should consider the following factors.

1. Domain Authority

Knowing the domain eligibility of the websites you are considering for link acquisition is important. A great tool for doing this is the Moz Bar, which shows the eligibility status of a domain or keyword in search results.

Domain authorization for backlinks

2. Domain relevance

As mentioned above, getting links from relevant domains is an essential part of scalable link building. Domain relevance is also an important Google ranking factor and especially important if you want to avoid the effects of Google Penguin on your search engine ranking.

3. Anchor text

According to a study, "every single site you viewed that was hit negatively by the Penguin Update had a" money "keyword as anchor text for over 60% of inbound links."

That said, if you want to scale your external backlink efforts, you need to combine domain relevance with the right anchor text.

The anchor text is important in assessing the quality of a site. In the picture above, 704 websites are linked to Nerd Fitness via a branded anchor text (Nerd Fitness).

When creating an external link, consider using your brand name with other variations of keywords. You can name this branded hybrid anchor text.

For example, if your website is reiv.com.au, a real estate training website, you can use one of these variants of anchor text to generate backlinks:

  • reiv real estate training
  • reiv broker
  • reiv training for beginners

You can also vary the anchor text by using urls with your target keywords:

  • http://reiv.com.au real estate
  • http://reiv.com.au Estate training
  • Real estate training at www.reiv.com.au

With the right approach to quality content, domain relevance, trust flow, and anchor text, you will reap the benefits of real-world traffic and external links to your website.

Two-step strategy for backlinks

A two-tier link structure will help you increase the strength, juice, and potential of your inbound links.

2-tier strategy for backlinks

  • Tier 1 backlinks are links that you earn / create directly to your website.
  • Tier 2 backlinks are links that pass the ranking value directly on to tier 1 links.

If you get a link to your "money page" from a new post on another blog, that website link may not add much value to your website ranking.

In most cases it can take a while for direct backlinks to your website to take effect. However, as you step up those backlinks, you will see a surge in organic traffic and rankings.

One way to strengthen these connections is through social signals. When you route social signals to your Tier 1 backlinks (i.e. websites that are linked to you), you ultimately increase their effectiveness. This will improve your overall Google ranking and bring you the high PR you want.

For Tier 2 backlinks, you need to follow three simple steps:

Step 1: Write valuable articles and publish them on Web 2.0 sites like Tumblr, Web Node, and Blogger.

Let's use Tumblr as an example.

First, create and publish your blog.

tumblr 1 - adding a blog post to improve the backlink portfolio

Then click on "Add Text":

Step 2 in Tumblr to add your blog post. Tumblr is a great way to improve your backlink portfolio

Next, add and publish the title and content of your post.

Post articles on tumblr to improve backlink portfolio

Step 2: Index your Tumblr page by sharing the post url on Google+ and Facebook and pinging it on Pingomatic. Pingomatic syndicates your URL to major content aggregators.

Use Pingomatic to aid your backlink strategy

Wait for the site to be crawled and indexed. This should take less than 6 hours. Go to the google search engine for verification and paste your tumblr url into the search box.

Check if your article has been indexed. It needs to be indexed to get backlinks

Step 3: Once indexed, use a branded keyword on the Tumblr page to link to your website:

Use Branded Keywork To Enhance Your Backlink Portfolio

This backlink should point directly to your website, but it might not have a huge impact on your rankings. Not everything you do is going to be like a press release covered on the nightly news. There is still value, however.

In that case, create a tier 2 structure for this Tumblr page. Remember your link already exists. Now all you have to do is create more authoritative links to your Tumblr page.

You can achieve this by:

Attention: Using a tier 2 link building structure to strengthen your tier 1 backlinks will avoid over-optimizing the anchor text. Make sure you don't just use this tactic for link capture. The new page or website you create on platforms like Tumblr should be valuable and useful to users. From there you can add a website link.

Use generic anchor text. For example, if the keyword you are targeting is "UK military base" your anchor could be:

  • Find out more about military bases in the UK
  • Visit this British military base

In other words, don't link to your Web 2.0 website with an exactly matching combination of keyword and anchor text. This will actually affect your website's rankings.

Step 3. Keyword Research and Targeting to Enhance your backlink portfolio

Creating links of this size is about serving relevant content so that users keep linking to it. Keyword targeting is an important aspect of this.

For example, Moz got great results with a focused keyword strategy even in the early SEO days. Long-tail keywords in particular accounted for 80% of Moz's organic traffic compared to popular seed keywords:

Long tail search traffic helps build backlinks

How relevant are your keywords to the needs of the potential customers? If you want to make your website perform better by building external links, you cannot afford to ignore keyword research.

Keyword research can help you dig into the minds of your target audience.

For example, what happens if you do a keyword search in your industry for something like "the best social media strategist in NY"?

First, the people looking for this long tail keyword are interested in speaking / working with a professional who is knowledgeable about social media marketing. You don't want a newbie writing a boring press release, you want a strategist. someone with a proven track record.

Second, they only care about social media strategists who live in New York, which means they may be a local business owner who wants a face-to-face meeting.

If you've been in this niche, let's look at how to find appropriate keywords to help focus your content on the search engine and attract small business owners who need help with social media marketing.

First, use the Google AdWords Keyword Planner.

Step 1: Log into your account and select "Start Now". Once you're signed in, answer a series of questions so that Google can better understand your business and the keywords you should be targeting.

After you've answered the questions, Google will show you keyword topics that may be relevant to your business. You can click on the ones you want to target.

Google Keyword Planner to help with backlinks

Step 2: You can use some of the topics for your keywords or use tools like Ubersuggest to find additional keywords related to the topics that Google showed you.

Make sure to only include keywords that appeal to your target audience.

For example, if your target audience is a company looking for a social media strategist, you can use keywords like:

  • Social media strategist
  • Social Media Marketing Strategist
  • Social Media Marketing Company
  • Social Media Consultant

The people looking for the two keyword phrases above are likely freelancers looking to make extra money through social media marketing. Your target audience is the company that wants to hire the strategist, not the freelancer.

Never target keywords that are off-topic or unrelated to your core message, product, or service. They are not your ideal audience, so these link acquisition keywords are not right for you.

When creating a website link, you don't want to use anchor text that will bounce visitors to the website. Remember that scalable link building affects the relevance of the link domain.

Target audience of consumer demographics

This is another essential target element for link building. Knowing your audience demographics (age, gender, education, etc.) can put yourself in their heads. By doing this, you can create useful content to help them solve their problems. This is a key component in building organic links that will get you positive results with high PR.

The Columbus Metropolitan Library has useful resources that you can use to identify your target audience. The Lock Haven University Library also shows how the US Census can show the number of people in the country that match your target audience.

Visit Quantcast, log in, and enter your website url in the search bar to find out the audience demographics for your website. Scroll down to see demographics:

Demographics are important to get backlinks

This picture shows the demographics at Metacafe. It clearly shows that most of the target groups (readers) of the website are male and between 35 and 44 years old. There are also many readers in the 25 to 34 age group.

You can also visit pages that collect demographic information such as location, education level, income level, etc.

Automate for social signals

If you want to create social signals, you need to take advantage of automation with tools like Social Pilot.

Using social media action automation tools that can help you earn backlinks

If you want to get social signals to scale link acquisition and get great results, you need to create them continuously by sharing your content.

However, manual syndication can be time consuming. Imagine how long it would be before you shared your latest post in the top 20 social networks.

Other link building tools

Here are some more external link building tools that you can use to parse keywords, referring domain names, anchor text, and more:

  • Open Link Profiler: A powerful tool for link diagnostics and industry reviews.
  • Open Site Explorer: Use this tool from Moz to determine the number of backlinks and domain eligibility for referring domain names.
  • nTopic: A simple topic analysis tool. It will help you plan your content creation from scratch so you can effectively choose the right keywords and improve your rankings.

Step 4: earn editorial backlinks

When you get editorial backlinks from government websites, your external link building strategy will skyrocket. To get these links you need to provide immense value. You can't just put a text together and pray for miracles. Here are some techniques you can use to get high quality backlinks.

1: Skyscraper technology

After several years of fighting over traffic, Brian Dean cracked the code for building external links. After implementing it, hundreds of people started linking to his very first infographic and he received just over 50,000 unique visitors with tremendously high PR:

Earn editorial backlinks

If you want to do the same, use Brian's skyscraper strategy to:

  • Find successful content in your niche
  • Bring it up to date
  • Do it more thoroughly

To learn more about this strategy, check out this post to see how Brian Dean used the three techniques above to drive 40,000 visitors to his first infographic.

2: Research your competition's backlinks

The first tool I recommend is Moz's Link Explorer. Visit the website and enter your competitor's blog url. Let's see which of your posts received the most shares and comments (engagement).

First, enter the URL in the search bar.

Backlink Explorer Tool

Next, sign in by providing some basic information. Once you're signed in, Moz will display detailed information about the URL you specified. Scroll down the page to see the main websites that point to the domain you entered.

backlinks to the competitor followed at the top

Next, you can click "Top Links About This Site" for more information.

URL information for the backlink strategy

Look for high domain URLs related to the topic of your post. These are the urls that you should be targeting for backlinks.

3: Write a better headline and title

To grow your business, you need to take actionable steps to get results. One such action is to make better headlines than your competitors.

Here are three examples of good headlines:

  1. How Content Marketing Can Grow Your Email List
  2. 6 steps to getting more customers for your business through content marketing
  3. How a simple content marketing strategy improved my Google ranking by 110%

Adding numbers in titles works. I've seen a lot of articles that went viral because the headline had a number.

If you can make better headlines, the chances are your post will go viral.

4. Offer value in your content

Here are a few ways to make sure your content is valuable:

  • Create more clickable, specific, and beneficial headings.
  • Include data points in the post.
  • Make your post longer. Ideally, write a post with more than 2000 words, as the length of the blog post will affect Google ranking.
  • Use charts, screenshots, and high quality images to secure your points, not just text with an external link.
  • Avoid personal opinions and include scientific research studies and experiments.
  • Link to relevant authority blogs to create more value.
  • Ask emotional questions.
  • Mention power users, experts, and popular bloggers.
  • End with a call to action (you can give away a checklist on your topic).

By following this tried and tested checklist, you can create more thorough, useful, and data-driven blog posts that stand the test of time. This is how you get high PR.

5. Send a thank you email

Send thank you messages when you mention authors and website owners in your post. They may be more willing to backlink you when sending a thank you note.

The following email template was presented to the founder of Backlinko by Peep Laja of ConversionXL.com. It may be short, but it helped Laja grow his blog to 100,000 visitors in less than 12 months:

6. Guest blogging

Guest blogging used to be very powerful, but you have to get it right.

In order for your guest blog to be successful, you need to provide useful content.

Obviously, when you make helpful and shareable posts, people will want to add a website link to you.

7. Trust with comments

You can use comments to get authoritative links.

Links from comments may not have a lot of SEO value, but they can be natural and relevant. This is one of the key factors that Google values. How to get backlinks from comments:

  • Look for blogs with the ComofLuv plugin dofollow installed.
  • Subscribe to post updates for at least 5 blogs.
  • Speed is important. When you get a notification that a new post has been published, read the post quickly (if it's a long one, read the first two paragraphs, then the last part for the key points).
  • Write a valuable comment. Avoid comments like "nice post," "great writing," or "this post helped me".

Here is the type of comment that can generate traffic and links back to your website:

This comment is rich, helpful, and well-written so readers can benefit not only from the blog post but also from the comment. And of course the commenter has linked back to his website in the URL field.

Here's another example from a man at Moz who left a wonderful comment and then linked to his blog post:

Conclusion

These days, you need to get to your website from all angles if you are to create a successful and scalable backlink strategy. You should consider things like quality content, easy website navigation, effective CTAs, etc.

If you take a holistic approach to improving your website and marketing strategies, you are more likely to get backlinks from authoritative sources, which in turn can improve yours
