Gradwatch 2020: Photographer Noé Warren, College of Brighton
"I'm not the least bit an experimental photographer," admits Noé Warren, a graduate of Brighton University. "I like people. I like to write them little love letters and photography is the best way I've found so far."
Warren's photography oscillates between sensitivity and solemnity, with care and collaboration throughout the image-making process. "A friend of mine once described my subject as 'Stories and People,' and while it's cheesy and not remotely groundbreaking, it's likely true," says Warren.
Warren's university experience was challenging yet invaluable: “I recently found my application portfolio while moving and realized how much I have improved over these three years of study, even though I felt like I hadn't made any improvements at all. I had learned so much and experimented to a depth that I would never have achieved in any other setting. “While working in the arts can be a chaotic lifestyle, Warren found Andrew Simonet's book Making Your Life As A Artist a helpful“ resource for reducing the fear of being an artist ”.
The first photography exhibition that Warren attended was an exhibition about the work of South African activist and artist Zanele Muholi at the Photographers' Gallery. They became "just a little obsessed" and read countless interviews with Muholi, fascinated by the relationships Muholi had with their subjects, which they sometimes had for years before the photos were taken. “I think that's incredibly important. Most of my subjects are queer and trans, mainly because I am queer and trans, and I feel a great responsibility to be as careful as possible with their faces and stories. And I think it takes time, solidarity, care and friendship, "says Warren.
"A lot of my work is collaborative or workshop-based because I believe the experience of doing the work has to be as good, if not better, than the picture," adds Warren. Previous initiatives included workshops on queer history photography for young LGBTQI + people and another series for transgender people on gender in science fiction. Warren has also worked on a three month AV project around Brighton's oldest queer pub, but her most “intense” project to date has been documenting her home life with her husband, who has a chronic illness.

While the Covid-19 pandemic has put most people into a new reality, Warren had already got used to everyday life. “My husband is chronically ill and has been bedridden for much of 2019. By the time Covid-19 reached Europe, we had been in a kind of lockdown existence for almost a year. When the lockdown came, nothing really changed in my little universe and it was so interesting to see the world go through this process of necessary self-isolation together that we only had to go through individually a year before. I think it's an experience that many chronically ill people and their families share. "
“Ironically, the pandemic has brought about many structural changes in institutional accessibility that have been invaluable to my personal situation as a caregiver. Tutorials have become videoconferencing, personal submissions have now been uploaded, and the extortionate printing costs that I had to contend with throughout my course just weren't an issue, ”says Warren, adding that they hope these new ways of working will help Weight of the arguments of disability rights activists on accessibility in education.
However, the pandemic has affected Warren's livelihood after previously doing commercial event photography to pay bills: “I had to take a full-time job and photography is no longer part of my daily life if I'm not active do it one. "You want to weave the two together in a series of photos that will involve the residents of the nursing home where they work.
In the near future, Warren has his sights set on a degree in nursing and hopefully an MA in art therapy to bring photography and therapy together. "While I don't know what this is going to be like yet, I think there's a niche there that could be really interesting. Given my track record so far, it's very likely I'll be doing something community-based if someone should have me . "
