Jean Jullien's colourful characters go open air

The illustrator's latest creations are part of the annual Le Voyage à Nantes art festival, during which summer, huge works of art and sculptures are spread outdoors in and around the French city

While most art festivals have been canceled or reinterpreted in virtual form after the pandemic, France's annual Le Voyage à Nantes is one of the rare events to receive the green light this year.

The festival takes place every summer in and around Nantes and enables visitors to discover new works of art and installations while strolling through the city's public spaces.

In addition to the illustration duo Mrzyk & Moriceau and the sculptor Vincent Mauger, Jean Jullien, who was born and grew up in Nantes, is one of the highlights of this year's program.

In contrast to some of the illustrator's earlier lockdown experiments, such as showing his brushing skills in the virtual exhibition Home Slice, his new works of art for Nantes are reminiscent of the humorous representations for which he has become so famous.

The series of four oversized characters can be seen at Le Jardine des Plantes and includes everything from a few colorful tree keepers to CR's personal favorite, an eight-meter swimmer who spits water in the middle of a pond.

The Voyage à Nantes takes place from August 8 to September 27. jeanjullien.com
