Sometimes creates id for Coventry's cultural metropolis in 2021

Already in 2017, Coventry was named the City of Culture in 2021 and the new branding for the upcoming one-year program was just launched. The program called Coventry Moves aims to create a template for a sustainable city. The identity combines elements of the city's past, present and future.

The identity was designed by Uncommon Creative Studio and is inspired by brutalist elements and modernist architecture to indicate the city's reconstruction after World War II. Based on a modular system of squares and simple shapes, the identity also aims to play on the innovations, movements and stories that characterize the city. For example, the graphical symbol in place of the "O" can be replaced by various circular symbols to represent the industries that played a role in Coventry's makeup, e.g. B. bicycles, clocks, planes and music.

The bright blue that can be seen everywhere is linked to Coventry's medieval past as the center of the British textile industry. The color, distilled from the color of historical yarns, was called Moving Blue and gives brightness to an otherwise monochrome aesthetic.

"The branding and launch of the British cultural city in 2021 is an incredible opportunity," said Nils Leonard, co-founder of Uncommon Creative Studio. "Coventry Moves is just the beginning. Working closely with the incredible team in town to build this year full of activities and positivity is something we are really proud to do our part in."

Coventry's year as a British cultural city begins in May 2021 (slightly delayed due to the corona virus) and includes a large number of international artistic events, world premieres and assignments for theater, music, dance, literature, comedy, festivals and conferences. The cultural program is intended to show how culture can be a force for change.

"After a very competitive tendering process, we are very excited to be working with Uncommon, ”said Laura McMillan, Director of Operations and Legacy at Coventry City of Culture Trust. "It was clear that they had Coventry. They understood that although we are primarily known for our past, our future is the most exciting. Our ambition and innovation keep us moving forward with people in our hearts. This is an identity that should evolve and adapt as we have always done. "

Accompanying the identity of Coventry Moves there is a one-minute film with archive material. It encompasses crucial moments and iconic locations from the entire city's history, from the FA Cup victory in 1987 in Coventry City to the city's two-tone music scene and the infamous Ringstrasse.

Although the festival merch is currently speculative, the posters and banners, which include photos of the people and places that make up the city, can be seen all over Coventry for the next two weeks to give a taste of it what will come.
