Studio DBD reveals a carefree id for Manchester & # 39; s The place There’s a Properly
The studio was hired to create something “disrespectful and bizarre” for a new bar and restaurant. It brought together local history and a brave frog mascot
Studio DBD founder Dave Sedgwick found the name for the Prestwich restaurant after studying historical maps of the area and discovering that there was once a water fountain. He says it's also a gentle nod to the challenges of starting a new business amid Covid.
Sedgwick said he knew the restaurant had to appeal to both adults and children as Where There's a Well is a family destination. "It was a bit random, but I immediately thought of the frog that lives in wells," he tells CR. "We tried different poses and styles, but ended up taking the illustrative approach because we wanted to recreate this in many materials in the room."
The mascot guards the light box signs in front of the restaurant as well as outdoor advertising in which he is enjoying a beer and a slice. The well-inspired ideas continue in a series of patterns based on the shapes and lines of coins and banknotes from around the world – a reference to the practice of throwing money into fountains for wishes.
Studio DBD's playful approach extends to font as well – a brush letter style reminiscent of food stalls and trucks around the world.
