The MakingIt21 poster challenge shares the business's constructive angle and knowledge
The last year has been difficult for everyone. In the creative industry, young and aspiring designers in particular had a hard time breaking through with canceled graduation shows and events and fewer available junior roles. Although the future of 2021 is still shaped by TBC, Design Director David Moloney created MakingIt21 as a source of positivity during this time, both for graduate designers and for anyone else in need.
Moloney spoke to 21 industry creators on the project, whose quotes were converted into 21 animated typographic posters. "The purpose of MakingIt21 is to spread optimism after a terrible year, a series of messages to graduate designers who have missed the typical opportunities, or to be honest, who is looking for a moral boost, ”says Moloney. “The goal is creativity for positivity. I know for myself that after 12 years of my career, throughout the duration of this project, I have spent a lot of time designing the posters and working with the quotes. "

MakingIt21 is a sequel to a D&AD New Blood event that Moloney hosted in 2015 that was a series of talks for graduates. This updated version takes digital form, with Moloney sharing the posters online and on his social channels. The creatives who deliver wisdom include Stefan Sagmeister, Camille Walala, Craig Oldham, Morag Myerscough, Tony Brook, Mills from Ustwo and many, many more.
The posters are bright, bold, and typographic, each with something different. To tie the series together, Moloney created a cute mascot that can be seen on most posters and that instills a sense of unity, fun, warmth and optimism. "The mascot has a human touch that a guy just can't do, for example the bump in G Torto's quote "It's about people". I mostly shared [the posters] on Instagram, so I wanted them to stand out because there is a lot of pure typography work and tons of amazing kinetic guys, ”explains Moloney. "It was a balancing act as I made sure to respect the quotes so that the mascot never takes over the canvas."

Moloney believes Advice always provokes very personal responses, but luckily there are a number of tips from experts. Something Posters are realizable and punchy like “Say what you mean. Do you mean what you say? And never ask for permission. " by Craig Oldham or "Don't fit in" by Wolff Olins & # 39; creative director Emma Barratt. Others remind you to be kinder to yourself, such as "You really can't go wrong" by David Ormondroyd, Associate Creative Director of Ragged Edge, and "Make beauty a goal in everything you create" by Stefan Sagmeister .
Since Moloney spoke directly to every creative, each poster is also accompanied by a longer caption that it is Share on his Instagram stories. "The captions are a great place to expand on the headlines that people contributed, ”says Moloney. “Almost everyone had more to add. The captions are often the best parts, for example, I really like the Terry Stephens Hustle story, and Jack Renwick had some good advice and went to great lengths. "

With MakingIt21, Moloney says he learned three things about the process and himself. The first is that while side projects may look simple on the outside, they actually take a lot of effort to adapt. "But they can be very rewarding and help move you forward," he says. "Posting design work on Instagram is also very stressful, but you can learn a lot through the process. “I like it” isn't everything, ”he adds. Ultimately, Moloney says this project reminded him that the design community can actually be a very welcoming place, with "99% of creative people willing to help and offer advice where they can," says he. "Reach out to them, the designers you admire have an email inbox."
So far, there are plans to keep MakingIt21 going digital, but Moloney hopes that one day he will be able to create printed versions of the posters, possibly as postcards on 21 different paper stocks.
